Armenian-Russian Flute Prodigy Yulia Musayelyan to tour Argentina
Audiences in Buenos Aires and Córdoba, Argentina will receive a special holiday treat with Russian-Armenian flutist prodigy Yulia Musayelyan. Her highlight performance will take place at the Thelonious jazz club in Buenos Aires on December 27. Musayelyan's choice to tour the South American country can be seen as a bold move; her debut album, Caminos is influenced by Latin jazz in addition to traditional music from her roots. Musayelyan has been subject to some conspicuous attention these days. She was recently featured on BBC in "The World" program, in addition to touring the Northeastern United States. Musayelyan's band features first-call musicians, pianist Guillermo Klein, saxophonist Javier Girotto, drummer Martin Bruhn and bassist-composer Fernando Huergo. Huergo is known in the United States and Europe as a leading musical force in developing Chacarera-Jazz, a popular blend of folk music rhythms combined with jazz improvisation. Being the early 21st century equivalent of what Bossa Nova used to be in the 1960s and 70s, Chacarera has quickly become a popular style to be adopted in the extended jazz family.
Yulia Musayelyan was born in Moscow, Russia, where her career started at the early age of four. She studied with Valery Brainin and later at the Gnessin School of Music for gifted children. As a teenager she performed in several classical, contemporary, jazz and world music contexts excelling as a rarely witnessed soloist with an unusual depth of expression in improvised music. She is a 2001 recipient of the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts Award and the National Merit Foundation scholarship award, as well as winner of the 2004 Lillian Fuchs Chamber competition. In 2005, she was a soloist with the TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble with guest conductor Pierre Boulez in the performance of L'explosante Fixe for three flutes, ensemble, and electronics.
